Don’t use your real name in chat rooms and don’t give out personal information like your address, mobile number, passwords, the clubs/school you go to, or photos of yourself.
Only arrange to meet someone you have been chatting to with your parent/ carer’s permission and at a time when they can be present.
Don’t reply to rude or nasty messages (and please don’t send anyone else because what's the point?).
Be very careful about accepting e-mails with attachments unless you know and trust the person who sent them – they can contain nasty images (that can upset you or get you into trouble) or viruses that may damage your computer (and be expensive to fix!).
Your parents will want to make sure you are safe online – Talk to them and agree some rules about what’s OK to do online and what isn’t – it will save arguments later!
If anything makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, talk to your parents/carers about it.
Remember, some people pretend to be someone younger or a different gender to try and make friends with you. Not all information can be trusted.
Do not give your mobile number out to someone you don’t know and, if you ever start getting annoying, mean or rude texts - tell your parent/carer straight away.
If anything or anyone is making you uncomfortable or worried in the way they are speaking to you online – tell your parents or carer straight away.
